NPR has posted a fun little article about the history of why we say “hello” when we answer the phone. (It wasn’t a given. Alexander Graham Bell thought “ahoy” was a better greeting.) I’ve learned the long version of this story in various media history classes I’ve taken, but I think NPR’s piece sums it up quite nicely. Enjoy!
